Gravesend is an ancient town in northwest Kent, it is the administrative centre of the Borough of Gravesham .
Gravesend today is a commercial and commuter town, providing a local shopping district: there are several of the multiple stores, and a good range of local shops. It has a market hall, open six days a week, and a recently established farmers’ market. Gravesend’s built-up areas comprise Painters Ash, adjacent to the A2;King’s Farm (most of King’s Farm estate was built in the 1930s); and Christianfields a development comprises 157 new homes for Rent, Shared Ownership and Private Sale. The latter housing estate has been completely rebuilt over a 6-year project from 2007 to 2013.
ASP Removals have moved many families and individuals to Nice Victorian and Edwardian homes located off Valley Drive and out east to Chalk. Also around Wrotham and Parrock Roads, Old Road East and the Windmill Hill conservation area, popular choices for London commuters
The Port of London Authority Control Centre has its headquarters at Gravesend, providing maritime pilots with radar nowadays playing an important role in shipping navigation up the Thames. Gravesend has the world’s oldest surviving cast iron pier, built in 1834. The pier was completely refurbished in 2004 and now features abar and restaurant. In March 2006 the first of the area’s new Fastrack bus services, which use a combination of ordinary roads and dedicated ‘bus tracks’, opened. The service links to Ebbsfleet International railway station, Greenhithe, Bluewater Shopping Centre and Dartford. Gravesend has a significant Sikh population. one of the United Kingdom’s largest and most impressive Sikh temples Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara was opened at a cost of £12 million.
Being inland and yet relatively close to continental Europe, Gravesend enjoys a somewhat more continental climate than the coastal areas of Kent, Essex and East Anglia and also compared to western parts of Britain. Thus Gravesend continues to record higher temperatures in summer , sometimes being the hottest place in the country.
