Gravesend is an ancient town in northwest Kent, it is the administrative centre of the Borough of Gravesham .
Gravesend today is a commercial and commuter town, providing a local shopping district: there are several of the multiple stores, and a good range of local shops. Being inland and yet relatively close to continental Europe, Gravesend enjoys a somewhat more continental climate than the coastal areas of Kent, Essex and East Anglia and also compared to western parts of Britain. Thus Gravesend continues to record higher temperatures in summer , sometimes being the hottest place in the country.
